In 1993, when playgrounds were being closed all over the country, IRD Kiltimagh wanted to provide a facility for the younger generation locally. We developed the initial playground based on recycled timber. The playground was initially run by a voluntary committee and to comply with insurance regulations, it was required to be supervised at all times.
Because the Irish weather is just a little damp by times, we added an indoor area, Maghus Castle, in 2003.
In 2008, with some financial support from Mayo County Council and the LEADER Programme, together with a significant amount of our own resources, we completed a full upgrade of the outdoor playground. Go-Play were contracted to provide an extensive amount of equipment all of which is compliant with modern standards for safety and stimulation, and also, a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA).
The playground was operated privately by IRD Kiltimagh up to July 2015 and a small charge was levied to cover the cost of insurance and upkeep. From July 2013 to date, an arrangement has been put in place between Mayo County Council, IRD Kiltimagh and Mayo Celtic Holidays, whereby the playground is accessible for use by all for free.
Opening hours are 09.00 to nightfall.
(All year round!)
Admission: FREE
(For safety and security reasons the playground is secured and monitored by CCTV outside of the opening hours.)
The Tir na nÓg outdoor playground is located right beside Maghus Castle. More details and directions from here:
