VELORAIL GRANT ANNOUNCEMENT - 1st. March 2019

We have just received news that Michael Ring T.D., Minister for Rural and Community Development, today announced a LEADER grant of €198,794.61 towards a total expenditure of over €265,000 which will provide:
- 16 custom built Velorail Carts,
- 3 Turntables to enable the carts to be turned on the track,
- Website and Logo Design,
- Surfacing of the embarking and turning areas,
- Signage.

This expenditure will provide the components of the project not covered by the earlier grants secured by Mayo County Council. This grant means that we can shortly proceed with the procurement of the carts which have to be custom built for the Irish track gauge.

The project will ultimately be centred on the railway station area, which IRD Kiltimagh has developed, and maintained for the past 30 years. It’s great to have such a wonderful and unique area which is the Kiltimagh Sculpture Park and the Station Area as an idyllic setting for such a unique one – off project as the Velorail.

We very much look forward to the contribution the Velorail project will make to the Economy of Kiltimagh and East Mayo and to the employment it will create, both in the project itself and in the various businesses in the town.

We want to thank Minister Michael Ring T.D. Minister for Rural and Community Development for the insight and vision he has shown and for his unwavering support for the Velorail project. We also extend our sincere thanks to the staff of South West Mayo Development Company (LEADER), and the Mayo Local Action Group. Finally for now, we want to extend our appreciation to our partners in the project, Mayo County Council (Tourism Office), and Kiltimagh Tourism with whom the project would not exist.

The real work starts now on this section of the project, but after many years of plotting and planning, preparing paperwork, submitting applications, feeling our way because the project is so unique, we are finally getting onto the home straight and are within touching distance of the project becoming a reality
